The Yew Tree is thought to date back to 1841. It was little more than a cottage and it faced directly on to the main road. Opposite the Yew Tree was another small public house called The Rifle Volunteer. The Yew Tree stood very close tho the toll house and the toll gate across the turnpike road. The Yew Tree at some point became Mellersh and Neale house and was a successfully run brewery in Reigate.
Back in 1890 the driectors of Mellersh and Neale purchased a parcel of land in Beech Road next to the Yew Tree to give the brewery sufficient space to replace the old Yew Tree with a new larger building. Having acquired the land, the plan lay dormant for 48 years and it was not until 1938 that work on the new Yew Tree commenced. The old building remained open for business while the new building was being built behind it. As soon as the new Yew Tree was open for business the old building was demolished.
